What is the non-periodic pre-registration inspection?
In Spain, the non-periodic pre-registration inspection is a technical inspection that must be passed by vehicles that have not been previously registered in the country, i.e. new vehicles or those coming from another country.
This inspection is performed to check that the vehicle complies with the technical and safety requirements established by Spanish legislation. Among the elements that are checked in this inspection are gas emissions, lighting, braking and suspension systems, and bodywork.
The non-periodic inspection prior to registration is performed at an ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) station authorized by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. Once the inspection has been passed, the vehicle can be registered and circulate legally in Spain.
It is important to note that the costs of the non-periodic pre-registration inspection are borne by the vehicle owner and may vary depending on the province and the ITV station where the inspection is performed.

All imported vehicles, wherever they come from, must pass a pre-registration inspection as the first step for registration in Spain. This inspection is carried out at the ITV stations, and is known as "ITV prior to registration", where, after a favorable result, the Spanish technical data sheet is issued. This requires, in addition to the vehicle documentation, the reduced technical data sheet or the reduced technical data sheet or the COC certificate of conformity, either oneeither of the two.
If the ITV for the change of license plates is performed in the Community of Madrid, you can benefit from a discount by purchasing the ticket directly from us, without having to make any additional payment. You save up to 20€!

When does an imported car pass the MOT?
In Spain, an imported car must pass the Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV) under the same conditions as a domestic vehicle. Therefore, the deadline for passing the ITV of an imported car is the same as that of a car registered in Spain.
The first deadline for passing the ITV on a new car is four years from the date of first registration, and thereafter, every two years. However, if the vehicle is more than ten years old, the periodicity is reduced to once a year.
It is important to bear in mind that, in some cases, imported vehicles may require modifications to comply with technical and safety requirements in Spain. Therefore, it is recommended to check with a mechanical workshop and with the entity in charge of the ITV if adaptations are needed for the imported vehicle to comply with Spanish regulations.
Prior to all this, the first thing to do is to pass the ITV prior to registration in order to be able to register the vehicle in Spain.
How long can I circulate in Spain with a foreign license plate?
According to Spanish regulations, vehicles with foreign registration plates can legally circulate in Spain for a maximum period of 6 months from the date of entry into the country. This period applies both to Spanish citizens who bring a vehicle from another country and to foreign citizens who circulate temporarily in Spain with their own vehicle.
Once the 6 months have elapsed, the vehicle must be registered in Spain in order to continue circulating legally in the country. Registration involves obtaining a new Spanish license plate, paying the corresponding taxes and complying with the technical and safety requirements established by Spanish legislation.
It is important to note that in the event that a vehicle with a foreign registration is used regularly in Spain for a period of more than 6 months, it may be sanctioned by the Spanish authorities. In addition, the lack of registration in Spain may imply limitations in the insurance coverage of the vehicle.
What papers do I need to register a car in Spain?
To register a car in Spain, the following documents are required:
- Technical Inspection Card: This document certifies that the vehicle has passed the technical inspection and complies with the safety and emissions requirements established by law.
- Vehicle Identification Document: It is the document that identifies the vehicle, its manufacturer, model, chassis number, engine number and technical characteristics.
- Purchase document: It is the document that certifies the ownership of the vehicle and must contain the data of the buyer and the seller, as well as the amount of the transaction.
- Road Tax Payment Document: This is the document that certifies that the municipal tax corresponding to the current year has been paid.
- Application for registration: This is the document that must be presented at the Provincial Traffic Headquarters to request the registration of the vehicle.
In addition, in some cases, it may be necessary to present other documents such as the vehicle invoice, the original vehicle registration certificate from the country of origin and the reduced technical data sheet or European certificate of conformity.
It is important to note that the documents may vary depending on the status of the vehicle (new or second-hand, national or imported) and the autonomous community in which the registration is made. Therefore, it is recommended to consult with the corresponding Provincial Traffic Headquarters to obtain detailed information on the documents required in each case.
